OUR PHILOSOPHY

Goaltending is an extremely technical position and yet remains one of the least studied positions by many coaches. In order to be a successful goaltender at the elite level, it is essential for goaltenders of all ages to receive goalie specific instruction and practice.

Athletes new to the goaltender position must acquire a foundation from which they develop an individualized style. Basic components and principles should be applied to all inexperienced goaltenders which can in turn be utilized in both practice and game situations. Positioning, movement and recovery must be stressed at this level to instill good habits early in the athlete’s career. Generally, the butterfly technique is emphasized as a means to staying square to the puck however is not forced upon any goaltender.

As the goaltender progresses toward the elite level, an individualized style has been established. At this level, speed and power are continuously improved and emphasized with each drill. Body control is the most important skill to be mastered. Elite goaltenders have the ability to move into a good position to make the first save in both practice and game situations, however, what is important is the puck placement following the save (rebound control) as well as their ability to move to make a second and third save if necessary. Elite goalies must be able to control their movements and have the ability to move throughout the crease at any point in order to always stay square to the puck and keep the puck in front of there body.
